Electronics Manufacturing Services in India: What to Ask Before You Choose a Partner
Choosing an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) partner is one of the biggest decisions in a hardware product's life. A low quote per board can hide long lead times, rework and field failures. This guide lists what to check, and what to ask, before you commit.

What to evaluate
DFM feedback. A good partner reviews your design before quoting and returns specific comments on pad geometry, panelisation, test access and component choices. If a quote arrives without a single question, be careful.
Component sourcing. Ask how they manage the bill of materials: approved vendor lists, alternates, counterfeit-risk controls and how they handle shortages. Lead times for imported parts are a common cause of delay.
Process capability. Check what the SMT lines can place and inspect: fine-pitch parts, BGAs, reflow profiles, automated optical inspection (AOI) and X-ray for hidden joints.
Quality standards. Ask which classes they build to under IPC standards (IPC-A-610 for acceptability of assemblies, J-STD-001 for soldering) and whether they hold ISO 9001. Higher-reliability products need Class 3 discipline.
Traceability. You should be able to trace a failed unit back to its batch, components and process settings.
Test coverage. Ask about in-circuit or flying-probe testing, functional test, and burn-in where it matters. Agree who builds and maintains the test fixtures.
Yield and failure analysis. Ask for first-pass yield on similar products and how failures are investigated, for example through a documented corrective-action process.
From prototype to volume
Build a small pilot batch, tens of units, and treat every defect as information.
Freeze a golden sample and a golden BOM.
Put change control in writing: any component or process change needs your approval.
Scale in steps, and review yield after each step.
Where the real cost sits
The price per board is only part of the cost. Count rework, scrap, delayed shipments, field returns and the engineering time spent chasing quality issues. A partner who asks hard questions early usually costs less over the life of the product. For the engineering side of this, see Designing for Manufacturing Reality and Traceability Is No Longer Optional.
Red flags
No DFM questions and no request for the full BOM
Vague answers on traceability or incoming inspection
No willingness to share process or yield data
Pressure to change components without your sign-off
